An Exciting, New, Fun Community Newspaper Kid Creative Feature

Sampling of Correspondence Received From KCS'nS Page Publishing Newspapers:

As the interim features editor at the Kingston Whig-Standard, I have been responsible for paginating the Kids’ Creative Stuff’n Such since last July.  It is obvious – as Ron would say – that Kingston kids love drawing their socks off.  Every week, my mailbox is jammed with submissions from children from Kingston and area schools of all ages.  I’ve had employees of The Whig drop by my office to ask if there’s a way their child could get published on this page because it would be such a thrill to see their names in print.  I have also had teachers phone me to say that we’ll never know how much it meant for one of their students to get published in The Whig.  One teacher from St. Martha’s School called to say that one boy’s life had been changed forever after his cartoon appeared in The Whig because it was one of the first positive things that had happened to him in years and it was an amazing ego boost.

To accommodate coverage of the Pope’s death and the Juno Awards in a Monday issue, we pulled the Kids’ Creative Stuff’n Such page.  Unhappy readers phoned to ask where it went and demanded to know when it would be returning to our pages.
The page gets children looking at the paper – we’ve even had grandparents mail the page to their grandchildren in other cities and then get it sent back so that they may send it to us.

… After some admitted hesitation at the start, once we committed to the project I could see its potential. Of course, the fact our ad manager was keen on it and quickly found a client (Dairy Queen) that was as well, helped motivate me to get going. The first week, combining our 'new look' launch with a free giveaway at the Dairy Queen and the start of the Kids' Page, was a multiple whammy that seemed to get everything rolling in high gear. We had kids from staff members for that first page, and ever since we have been swamped with submissions We had about 20 after the first page appeared on Oct. 3, and each week the list grows. So far this week we've had over 100, and considering we can get in six per week that's pretty amazing. We are in the process of running some ads for the workbooks, and if the demand for them is anything like the reaction to the page, we could sell out of our initial order very quickly. All in all, I'd say it has been an unqualified success - despite my early hesitation!

The initial reception in the community of the Kids' Creative Stuff'n  Such page was remarkable. The first page was published on a Saturday and the first full-class submissions arrived Monday.  The teacher at St. Alphonsus School said it was excellent for his art class. Since then about two class packages a week arrive, not to mention the hundred or so individual submissions. They increase each week. The Examiner had pre sold approximately 25 books before they even arrived. I'm told the sales are brisk.

… Re your note:  Several teachers had tagged notes on their submissions. Unfortunately I no longer have them. The essence of the notes was they are happy that The Examiner is publishing the page. They use it regularly in their art classes. I get about four class submissions a week. Each week there is at least one new school or teacher sending in class submissions. I get about 60 drop-ins or mail-ins a week and even received one by faxx, it was too fuzzy to be used.

We have sold out of the drawing books. … Could another shipment be sent? Shane in advertising says they have booked three banner ads for the page …

Overall I've had only positive response to the page. Thanks

All I can say is WOW!

I've heard such positive feedback from parents, kids and teachers! the first page ran on Saturday Oct 22 and we already have had cutouts from the paper submitted, one as early as Saturday afternoon. Envelopes full of "masterpieces" have been steadily coming into the office from entire classrooms, all from a mailout that I sent you previously. Advertising response has been good as well, 2 local retailers are signed up. …  All in all Ron WOW!  We've never, sadly had a good response from our schools with some of the projects we think would be good to try, until this one!
Your help and ideas are always welcome! …Thanks Ron!

The Daily Post published its debut Kids' Creative Stuff 'N' Such page as part of the paper's first TMC edition on Oct. 7. In the following three weeks the page has garnered upwards of 100 responses and the advertising department is close to securing a sponsor. The response we have had about the page, from kids, parents, grandparents and teachers, has all been very positive. …
It has been a very welcome addition to The Daily Post and resulted in very little extra work for the editorial department. Any paper would benefit from adding the Kids' Creative Stuff 'N' Such page to their content.

I am hoping for an ETA on the Kid's Creative Books.  I have a list of people waiting on backorder.  I know they went to print last week.  Are you able to get them to me this week.  Also increase my order from 50 to 100 if possible. Thanks

I thought I would share with you some of the great results we’ve had with your Kids Creative page and drawing book since we first published it in May of 2005 in the Standard-Freeholder.

The children really took to the page right away. Pictures have come in by the thousands since then and continue to pour in to me daily. Parents really get behind their children and wait to see their children’s drawings in our paper. (I post 6 every week on your page).

I sometimes get absolute scribblings from 5 year olds, but still put their work in the paper. It’s all about creativity not “who’s the best”. This approach is noticed by the public and appreciated from comments I receive.

Teachers in many schools have set up assignments and have brought in envelopes packed with pictures from their students. It has become a highlight for them creating each week.

I can assure you when we have had school tours in our shop and at trade shows, we ask “have you seen our Kids Creative page every Monday’? There is never a no in the house. A resounding yes comes forth! It is an excited response!
Although starting just before the end of school, the summer months saw thousands still coming in. A very interesting point is although we are a local paper I have received drawings from Baton Rouge, Florida, Los Vegas, Maine and from Canada’s east coast. Children travelling with their parents in our area visiting family have been exposed to Kids Creative and mailed their creations when they got home.

We have sold many Kids Creative books in our office and continue to promote it. We believe it truly reaches children, encourages their creativity, brightens their day and creates added value for our paper. Win Win!
